If It's Not Fun, It Won't Get Done
One of the guiding principles of Reset ADHD is “If it’s not fun, it won’t get done.” I try to make my coaching fun and engaging. I want to make sure my clients are excited about coaching and trying the strategies we discuss in our coaching sessions. There is a very good reason for this: The ADHD brain loves fun!
Who Doesn’t Want to Have Fun?
Ask anyone if they like having fun, and they will say, “Yes,” or they will lie to you. Everyone loves fun. Where we might differ is what we find fun, but we all like fun. Therefore, give yourself permission to have fun. It will help you in the long run.
Interest Is Key to Productivity When You Have ADHD
Having fun is a big productivity boost. The ADHD brain runs on an interest-based nervous system. That means the ADHD brain must be doing something highly engaging if it wants to focus. In short, if it’s not fun, it won’t get done. Therefore, we need to find ways of making the boring tasks fun.
Make the Boring Tasks Fun!
We all have tasks we do not enjoy doing that must get done. In order to get them done, we must make them fun. How do we accomplish this? Two ways: Gamification and pairing it with something fun. Gamification involves setting up a way to make the task a game. I have written several blog posts on how to do this, but to summarize, I will say that, if you find a way to make it a challenge, you have gamified it. Pairing it with something fun allows you to do the task while enjoying something fun. For example, I usually have the tv on when I am unloading the dishwasher. It makes the task less dreary. These are just two examples of how to make things fun. I am sure there are more out there. If you need help finding the fun in your boring tasks, perhaps the time is right to explore coaching.
