Book Recommendations from Reset ADHD
Looking for something to read? I got you covered! Here are some recommendations:
Delivered from Distraction by Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey
Dr. Hallowell is the bomb dot com. If you have not read his writing, listened to his podcast, or heard him speak, you are missing out. This is a great first step into his work.
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
Not everything on this list is going to be ADHD-related. This is a fantastic book, and the movie does not do it justice.
Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker, PhD
I do not exaggerate when I say this book will change your life. Sleep is freaking important, and you will learn so much about it by reading this book. I challenge anyone to read this book and then continue living as they had been.
The Myth of More: And Other Lifetraps That Sabotage the Happiness You Deserve by Dr. Joseph R. Novello
I was required to read this book my first semester of college. Forcing a bunch of 18-year-olds to read a book like this seems like a fool’s errand, but I actually read it. I found it insightful and helpful, especially considering I was living away from home for the first time. I have always meant to go back and re-read, but I have not yet done so. It provides a framework for moving forward in life to (hopefully) achieve happiness without being hindered by the problems of one’s past. Plus, the guy who wrote it is a psychiatrist who hosted a call-in radio show. He’s basically Dr. Frasier Crane.
Smart But Stuck: Emotions in Teens and Adults with ADHD by Thomas E. Brown, PhD
This is one of the first books on ADHD I read (actually, i think it was an audiobook). I read it maybe a year or two after my ADHD diagnosis. I knew I was smart, struggling to do something with my life, could do more, and needed to get going with being an adult. This book gives examples of people who are smart but hindered by ADHD and the emotional struggles caused by ADHD.
Our Numbered Days by Neil Hilborn
The frank and funny poetry of Neil Hilborn touches many subjects, most notably love and mental health. This book features his poem “OCD” which went viral on YouTube.
Taking Charge of Adult ADHD by Russell A. Barkley, PhD with Christine M. Benton
Have i mentioned what a BOSS Dr. Russell Barkley is? He is the best researcher on ADHD, and no one is more dedicated to spreading awareness of how imperative it is to diagnose and properly manage ADHD.
