Dealing with Overwhelm
Overwhelm can be a common occurrence for those of us with ADHD. A big project can seem insurmountable. However, it does not have to be that way. You can overcome the beasts in your life. You can slay the dragon.
Break It Down
Break large projects down into smaller, more manageable chunks. By looking at larger projects in smaller chunks, you create footholds in the mountain you are trying to climb. The big task seems more likely to be conquered than when you look at it if you have smaller tasks that you can do.
Write about It
Writing down your overwhelming thoughts can help you get them outside of your brain and release any stress associated with those thoughts. My brother (a therapist) recently told me that he had a professor in grad school who said that people will think about something many times, but they will write about it once. Writing has tremendous power. If you are overwhelmed, it might be time to start a habit of journaling.
Talk It Out with Someone
If breaking down the task or writing about it does not work, it might be best to talk through the problem with someone. A powerful example of talking it out with someone is talking with a coach. A coach will help you breakdown your overwhelming problem into manageable chunks or help you find another way to manage the big task. It is a powerful tool that might be right for you. If you need a more immediate solution, a friend or family member who is not going to judge you would be beneficial as well. The important thing to remember is: You are not alone.
