When to Hit the RESET Button
I talk a lot about hitting the RESET button on ADHD. In fact, I named my coaching practice after that. I firmly believe in hitting the RESET button and starting again with strengths-based strategies. However, there can be a temptation to power through when things get tough. It can be difficult to know when is the proper moment to hit RESET. I have compiled some times when hitting the RESET button would be beneficial. But, these are not the only times when hitting RESET would be advantageous. There are more, and I hope you recognize those moments when they arise.
When ADHD Feels Like Too Much to Handle
Life with ADHD can be tricky at times. A swarm of thoughts or emotions can easily overwhelm the ADHD brain. In these moments, it is good to step back, take a deep breath, and start again. In other words, it is appropriate to hit the RESET button. If you begin to feel overwhelmed by your ADHD symptoms, hit the RESET button!
When You Are Stressed
Stressful moments are perfect for hitting the RESET button. In these moments, it can be hard to think clearly and approach the situation rationally and calmly. Pausing, breathing deeply, and starting again can work wonders. Additionally, hitting the RESET button in moments of stress can lead to a sense of peace and serenity.
When You Mess Up
We all mess up every once in a while. We forget to do the thing or just do it poorly. We need to recognize that a mistake was made, pause, and plan on how to avoid the same mistake in the future. This is where a good reset comes in. It can help provide a framework for being more successful in the future. Dropping the ball is not fun, but it can lead to growth.
When Life Seems Tough
Life can get tough. In moments when life seems tough or difficult to endure, hit the RESET button. Pause and start again. You do not have to accept defeat.
Post-Script: Strengths-Based Strategies
I would be remiss if I did not talk about what to do after hitting the RESET button. You need to start again with new strengths-based strategies. If you continue using the same strategies as before, you will only get the same results. Strengths-based strategies are your best bet for overcoming the challenges presented by ADHD. If you need help identifying your strengths, I have written a blog post on that very subject. Additionally, coaching can be a great way to identify your strengths.
