What to Do While Climbing Your Mountain
Whether you are managing ADHD or fighting some other battle, you can sometimes feel like you are climbing a mountain. Climbing a mountain is daunting and takes hard work, as does battling ADHD. If you are on a mountain, there are some things you should know.
You Are Not Superman
Clark Kent’s alter ego can leap tall buildings in a single bound. However, you are not the Man of Steel. You cannot take one giant step and climb your mountain. To climb a mountain, we non-Kryptonians must climb our mountains one step at a time. This is a slow process, but there are two things you can do to help you along the way.
Look Back
When it seems like you have too far to go to reach the top of your mountain, look back. See how far you have come. Looking back at where you were as compared to where you are now will give you the confidence to move forward. You will know that progress is possible. You can climb this mountain, and you will know you can climb it because you have just seen what you have done.
Look Ahead
While enjoying your success is good, you cannot allow yourself to be content with looking back. You still need to move forward. Not making progress can lead to sliding back down the mountain if you are not careful. Looking back can make you say, “Well, I have climbed far enough,” but the point of climbing a mountain is not to stop part of the way up. The goal is to reach the summit, to stand on top of the mountain as a champion. It is equally important to look ahead as to look back. To keep climbing, you need to know how far you still need to go.
When to Do What
The key is to know when to look back and when to look ahead. It will be different for everyone, and it takes self-reflection. It might even take someone else to help you see what you need. That could mean a friend or a family member. It could also mean hiring a coach. If that is the case, I would be glad to help. Just keep in mind that this needs to be what is best for you, not what someone else tells you is best for you.
