What ADHDers Can Learn from Batman
My favorite fictional character is Batman. I could give you a litany of reasons why, but suffice it to say, he is awesome. Previously, I have written about what ADHDers can learn from various pop culture shows, movies, etc. But, I have yet to write one about Batman. It is time to right that wrong. I believe there are a few things ADHDers can learn from Batman.
Turning Hardship into a Positive
Batman lost his parents at a young age. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he chose to make a positive impact in the world. He took on the mantle of the Batman and sought justice. Batman does not want any child to lose his parents the way he did, so he spends his nights fighting crime.
Life with ADHD has its hardships. You can wallow in self-pity, or you can choose to make a positive impact in your world. What will you choose to do?
Don’t Have to Do It All on Your Own
Batman’s natural inclination is to do it all himself. However, as time goes on, he learns that it is okay to have a helper. Batman teams up with Robin, Batgirl, the Justice League, and others from time to time. He swallows his pride and asks for help when needed.
It may be your natural inclination to battle your ADHD symptoms alone. However, you do not need to do so. Other people can help you along the way. Find friends, family members, or a coach to help you in your crusade against the symptoms of ADHD. Who will be in your Justice League of ADHD?
Never Give Up
Batman constantly loses the first battle against a villain, but he never gives up and lets the bad guy have his way. On the contrary, he keeps working hard until he has stopped his foe. The Joker, Bane, Sacrecrow, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and the other villains he routinely faces challenges him, pushes him to his limits, but he never gives up.
At times, the effects of ADHD can push you to your limits. Do you give up? Or, will you push yourself to keep trying? Will you refuse to give up? In short, will you be Batman in the face of challenges?
