Recognizing Gifts

Life can be great, but not when you can’t see it. So, open your eyes to life: to see it in the vivid colors that God gave us as a precious gift to His children, to enjoy life to the fullest, and to make it count. Say yes to your life.
— Nancy Reagan

What can you do with the people and things around you? Can you work with them, instead of working against them? Can you create with them, instead of creating in spite of them? If you mess up, can you use your mistake for your benefit or the benefit of others? In short, do you recognize the gifts in your life? Those of us with ADHD can miss the gifts if we are not looking for them.

Look for the Gifts

Instead of just going through life in a robotic fashion, find ways of opening your eyes to the gifts that are around you. Find the things in life that give you joy. If you look for them, you will find them. One exercise I sometimes have my clients do is to write down all of their wins. By doing so, they become more able to see their successes. If you track all of the things in your life that are gifts, you will become better able to see others. They are there; you just have to look for them.

NOTE: Most gifts are not physical things.

Cherish the Gifts

Finding gifts is one thing, but cherishing them is another thing. Once you find the gifts, enjoy them. Don’t just say, “Oh, that’s cool,” and carry on how you were previously acting. Take the time to be changed by the great things in your life. Spend some time with the gifts of your life. Sit with them. Don’t be afraid to slow down and cherish the gifts you have discovered. Your life will improve if you do.

The Gift of a Positive Mindset

Recognizing the gifts of your life creates a positive mindset. This can itself be a gift. You will be happier and healthier. You might even spread your joy to others. A mindset that is open to life’s gifts can help others to see how the things around them can be used to create beauty, humor, and growth. In short, be a gift to others by seeing the gifts all around you
