Deciding Now, Not Tomorrow
Have a decision to make? Have you been putting off the decision? That is not an uncommon issue with ADHD. Many with ADHD wait until later to make their decision. However, it is better to make the decision now. Let’s explore this further in this week’s edition of The Weekly Reset.
Deciding Later
Decisions can be brutal. It is hard to make a decision when you have ADHD. Everything is interesting, and you do not want to miss out on something interesting. It can be hard to pull the trigger and decide. The solution sometimes becomes deciding later. This is a form of procrastination. Procrastinating the decision does not help you get the decision made. It will still be there later.
Decide Now
When there is a decision to be made, it can be easy to decide later. It is easy to say, “I don’t have to decide now.” However, that leads to deciding later, and “later” is not a specific time. Instead of putting off the decision, decide now.
How to Decide Now
Okay, yes, it is easy for me to sit here and type, “Decide now,” but it is a lot harder to actually decide now. What can one do to decide now, as opposed to putting off the decision?
Well, the first thing to do is recognize that you need to satisfy, not maximize. Maximizing involves getting it perfect. Perfect does not exist in this world. Satisfying means good enough. What will be good enough?
If more than one thing will be good enough, flip a coin or roll a die. Leaving it up to chance might seem like a strange way of deciding something major, but it is one way to get unstuck.
Moreover, make the decision-making process fun. If you put too much pressure on yourself, you will not be able to decide. Making deciding fun can ensure that a decision gets made.
Lastly, I will say a coach can help you make a decision. Talking things through with someone else can be very useful. For more help deciding, read an old blog post of mine on this topic.
