Don't Be Afraid to Make Requests
One of the hardest things to do in life is to ask for help. It can be hard to admit you cannot do it all by yourself. In our fast-paced, kick-butt-and-take-no-names culture, some think it is a weakness to ask for help with something. However, it is essential to stand up for what you need and want out of life. You have a right to ask for what you want.
Self-care
If you are constantly sacrificing your wants and needs for others’ wants and needs, you are doing so at a cost to yourself. It is an act of self-care to reach out and ask for help or make requests. To look out for yourself is not selfish; it is necessary. If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot help others when they ask for your help. Those of us with ADHD tend to be people-pleasers, but we do so at our own peril. If all we are focused on is the wants and needs of others, we will run out of energy/gas/stuff/whatever-you-want-to-call-it for ourselves. Pretty soon, our help becomes worthless because we have nothing left to give. Therefore, it is imperative to take time for self-care and reach out for help when needed.
Self-Advocacy
It is also important to stand up for yourself. If you are not getting what you need to succeed, go out, and demand it. There is a right and a wrong way to do this, of course, but the underlying principle is true. Self-advocacy and asking for help when you need it is not wrong. You deserve to succeed as much as anyone else, and you deserve to have an equal opportunity to succeed. Life may not be fair all the time, but it does not have to be overwhelming. There is nothing wrong with asking for what you need.
