Embracing Imperfection
Many of us with ADHD are prone to perfectionism. We want everything to be as perfect as possible. This leads to all sorts of difficulties from procrastinating starting on something until we know it will go perfectly to constantly not finishing projects or assignments. This can be frustrating for us and infuriating to others. There is one little trick to getting past these struggles. That trick is to embrace imperfection.
The Problem with Imperfection
I know embracing imperfection sounds horrible. We are conditioned in our society to be perfect, to get the most out of life. This creates a desire within us to keep striving to better ourselves. The dirty little secret in all of this is we live in an imperfect world. Things do not always go according to plan, and people have flaws. It can be infuriating to see all that is wrong with the world, and it can motivate us to try and fix all the things. However, we have our limitations. We cannot make everything the way we want it. Life is imperfect.
Beauty in Imperfection
It might seem counterintuitive, but there is beauty in imperfection. Those little flaws are what make us unique. Heck, one of the most highly regarded and famous statues in the world is missing arms. It is our uniqueness that makes us lovable. So, when someone calls you imperfect, look at them and say, “Thank you.”
