Holiday Gift Guide for the ADHDer in Your Life
Well, I hate to break it to you, but this blog post is not what you were expecting when you clicked on this link. There are no product recommendations in this post. If that is what you are looking for, this blog post will disappoint you. However, do not close this tab just yet. I do have a few thoughts on what to give the ADHDer in your life and what not to give them.
Don’t Get Them an ADHD Product
Unless they specifically ask for a fidget toy or another product designed for those with ADHD, do not get them one. Giving a gift is not about what you think the other person needs; it is about what they would truly enjoy. By giving them an ADHD product as a Christmas gift, you single them out. It is like saying, “You’re different! Have a different gift!” What they want is not something that reminds them of what separates them from others. You will give a better gift by giving them something that they will enjoy. So, the question now becomes: What will they truly enjoy?
Think: Areas of High Interest
If you want a gift that will be used for a long time and not just for a brief period of time around Christmas, get them something from an area of high interest. What do they truly enjoy? What is one thing they never get bored with? Yes, those with ADHD can have rapidly changing interests, but that does not mean there are no areas of interest that are constant throughout their lives.
Think: Unique
Each person with ADHD is unique. They all have unique interests and hobbies. Do not get them something that will work for just anyone. Show them how special they are by getting them something that is unique as they are. One of the main reasons there are no product recommendations in this blog post is that I cannot give a recommendation that will be acceptable for everyone with ADHD. You have to get them something unique.
Get Creative
ADHDers are creative by nature. You will impress them by getting creative with your Christmas gift. I am more touched by Christmas gifts when they are the result of outside the box thinking than those that are just standard Christmas presents. Moral of the story: Be creative this holiday season.
