How Others Can Help You Manage Your ADHD
Human beings were not made for isolation. We were made for community. Including others in our ADHD management can be a gamechanger. We do not have to do it alone; we can have others help us. Believe me, there are others out there who want to help you. So, reach out and ask for help.
Support Groups
Joining a support group can help with feeling alone. Feeling alone can be one of the worst feelings. It tears you up inside. However, connecting with another person with ADHD can make life brighter. Having a conversation with some one who “gets it” feels amazing. If you feel alone, connect with others with ADHD.
This is why I started “Sioux Falls ADHD Adults” in my city. This is why ADDA offers virtual support groups. If you have not tried an ADHD support group, consider it highly recommended.
Outsourcing
When it comes to accompkishing what we need to accomplish, we must remember that we do not have to do everything ourselves. The tasks we are not good at or do not like doing can often be delegated. For example, I am writing this blog from a Panera Bread because my house is currently being cleaned by someone other than me. When I try and clean my house, I get distracted easily. Finding one thing in the room where it does not belong can distract me. It takes me a long time to clean my house. However, by paying a professional to clean it for me, I can avoid the time suck and use my time more efficiently. Yes, it is an expense, but I feel it is worth it. What tasks can you outsource to others?
Body Doubling
Sometimes, simply having someone in the same room as you can help you be productive. This is called body doubling. For example, if person A needs to clean their dishes and Person B needs to do their taxes, Person A can invite Person B over to sit in Person A’s kitchen while they both work on their tasks. This can be done in person or virtually. There is a website that allows you to work on your tasks with someone else via webcam. Try it out; you might be surprised with how well it works.
Medication Management
This is definitely an area where having another person can be helpful. Medications can be tricky to manage. Having a competent doctor on your ADHD-management team is a great asset. Unfortunately, there are not enough of these doctors out there, but if you can find one, hold on to them. They are a treasure.
Coaching
Hiring a coach is another way to get a great support system in place. Coaches work with you to learn how you best operate in the world and help you become the person you were meant to be. If you would like to work with your brain, not against it, consider hiring a coach.
