Everyone has things they need to do but cannot stand doing. For those of us with ADHD, the reason is often how boring we find those tasks. We need something interesting to inspire us into action. One way to get into action when faced with a boring task is to spice it up and make it more exciting. Here are some ways to do that:

Music

Turn on some tunes! Having music playing while you are doing the task will make it seem less awful. Last week, I wrote about how I turned on Frank Sinatra while doing the dishes. This allowed me to have some fun while doing something I hate.

TV Show

Another thing I hate is exercising. So one thing I have done to improve my exercise time is to watch a tv show. Now, I have set some strict rules about this tv show. I have chosen a tv show that I love, and I onlly allow myself to watch it when I am exercising. I have, therefore, created an association of that show with exercising. Exercise is less loathsome now because I have attached it to this tv show.

By attaching boring tasks to something fun, like a tv show, you can make them less dreary. If you are looking for a way to accomplish a loathsome task, try attaching it to your favorite tv show.

Gamify

I have written about gamification before. If you have a task that needs doing and a low desire to do it, try making a game out of it. Come up with rules for points, timing, and playing. There are many ways to go about this, and this is a chance for you to use your creativity, a strength of those of us with ADHD. What games can you create to make your boring tasks more interesting?
