Resetting My Coaching Presence

While watching the amazing new movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, I couldn’t help thinking that Mr. Rogers would have made a great coach. The way he locks into conversation with the people with whom he converses is what I want to be in a coach. In the movie and in real life, he also asks great questions that invite the other person to really think about what they are doing or saying. Seeing that movie and watching him do that on his show made me think…

It’s time for a RESET

The Issue

I am constantly seeking to grow as a coach and be a better coach. I see two (there are more) key aspects of being a coach. Being locked in with the client and asking powerful questions. I am not saying I am bad at those things, but I would like to be better.

My Why

This is my career, my livelihood. I should always be striving for growth in my career. Moreover, my career helps others grow. I, therefore, have almost an obligation to model growth for my clients.

WHO I Want to Be

I want to be like Mr. Rogers and a great coach. ‘Nuff said.

Strengths-Based Strategies

One of the things I am good at doing is watching TV. If I want to be like Mr. Rogers, I should keep watching his show. Yes, I am an adult, but I love his show. He is so genuine when he sings, “Won’t you please / Please won’t you be my neighbor.” Yes, Mr. Rogers, I will be your neighbor.

In addition to being genuine, Mr. Rogers was a very curious and creative man, and I think that helped him be able to dial into others and ask powerful questions. I believe that I am also curious and creative. I want to hone in on those skills in my coaching relationships and, heck, in my personal life, too.

Lastly, here is an out of focus video of me singing my version of the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood theme song:
