Resetting Video Games
I was bored last weekend and needed something to do. That was a problem that needed solving. Another problem that needed solving was how much I was spending on extras on FIFA 20’s iPad app. I had been tempted for a long time to buy a PS4 again, but last weekend seemed like it was reaching a point of no return. I did not want to buy a PS4 again, but it was something to do, and something I used to enjoy. I ultimately decided to buy it again, but I knew I could not use it the way I had used it in the past...
It was time for a RESET!
The Issue
The last time I owned a PS4, I kept feeling guilty about how much time I would spend playing it and how unsatisfied I felt after finishing playing. I would also stay up late playing it sometimes. I know what I would like to avoid now that I own a PS4 again.
My Why
There are so many things that are more important than video games, but there is nothing wrong with playing video games a little bit. It is a good way to give my brain some entertainment. I can slay the boredom monster responsibly, though. Therefore, I need some rules for my new PS4 that will force me to use it prudently.
WHO I Want to Be
I want to be a responsible adult. I know plenty of responsible adults who play video games, so it is possible. This means I can do it, as long as I am prudent.
Furthermore, some of my siblings have PS4s, and I would like to be able to play with them online. My mom has actually commented that she likes that aspect of video games. She likes it when her children play together. I would like to make sibling time with my new PS4 a priority……Andy? Joe? Rocket League sometime?
Strengths-Based Strategies
I am a coach, and I need to be my own client. I can help myself to set responsible rules for my new PS4. For instance, I can hold myself to playing no later than 10 PM. Furthermore, I can decide how long I will play before I start playing to prevent gaming sessions that are too long.
I can also turn my game time into professional development time. I hate the announcer on the NHL 20 game I bought, so I mute it anyway. I can listen to an audiobook while playing NHL 20, and FIFA 20 would be conducive to listening to an audiobook as well.
So, time limits and audiobooks will help me use my new PS4 prudently.
