The Weekly Reset: Just Keep Swimming

The teacher said the student will never amount to anything. The mother did not believe the teacher. She knew her son could do great things. She would not allow herself or her son to accept that condemnation.

It was time for a RESET!

The Issue

The student could not sit still and was struggling in school. The teacher had given up hope that the student could learn and be successful. The mother was desperate to prove the teacher wrong.

Why

The mother loved her son and would not accept a life of mediocrity for him. She was determined to help him succeed in something, anything. She wanted her son to be successful. If he could not be successful in school, she would help him find another area in which he could succeed. “It made me want to prove everyone wrong. I knew that, if I collaborated with Michael, he could achieve anything he set his mind to.,” she said.

Who

Her son, Michael Phelps, was a swimmer. He could not sit still in school, but he could swim for three hours. Debbie Phelps knew that he could succeed in the pool. Swimming became their priority.

Strengths-Based Strategies

Debbie found a tutor for Michael in math and encouraged the tutor to use swimming-or-sports-related word problems to keep his focus on math. By focusing on his swimming career, Michael learned self-discipline. The intense training regimine of swimming helped him have the structure he needed to stay focused. The lessons he learned about controlling himself and his time in his swimming training helped him learn how to control himself and his time outside of the pool. Furthermore, the exercise of swimming helped him use up the extra energy he had and allowed him to be able to focus in school.
