If you have ADHD, it is important to take care of your brain. Your brain is a powerful machine that can work against you if not cared for properly. Therefore, it is important what you put into your brain. To what sort of nutrients and media are you exposing your brain?

Nutrition

NOTE: A BAD DIET DOES NOT CAUSE ADHD

The types of food you eat can affect your brain. You want to be eating healthy, unprocessed foods. Protein, fruits, and vegetables are all things you should be consuming. Whereas, junk food and processed foods can have negative effect on one’s health and therefore brain. In short, your brain works best when you are eating a healthy diet. This article on ADHD and nutrition is a great read.

Music

What type of music are you listening to? The music we listen to can have an effect on our mood. When choosing the songs you listen to, make sure they include uplifting lyrics and/or peaceful sounds. If you are listening to sad music that may have a negative impact on your modd. “Bluebird” by Sara Bareilles may be a great song, but it does not leave you in the best mood. That does not mean all Sara Bareilles songs are bad; she has some good songs too. My point is: Find songs that benefit your brain and does not make them overemotional and out of control. One of my favorite genres of music is classical. Classical music promotes calmness and creates a peaceful atmosphere.

TV Shows/Movies

What messages are you receiving through the movies and TV shows you are watching? Consume stories that help your brain and do not condition you to think less of others. Plenty of media out there objectifies women and rewires your brain. In short, find movies and TV shows that do not subject yourself to unhealthy messages.

Verbal Messages

What type of messages are you receiving from those around you? Are you spending your time with people who criticize you or uplift you? Hanging around people who are negative can cause you to internalize that negativity and have lower self-esteem. Spend your time with people who are going to lift you up and point out your strengths.

Final Thoughts

If you are not careful, you could be consuming things that are hurting, not helping, your brain. Take stock of what you are putting into your brain, and ensure that you are giving it only the best. If you need help breaking a bad habit and/or starting a healthy habit, a coach can be helpful.
